When making the funeral arrangements with each family we want to make the family aware of the costs of their chosen arrangements and to provide an estimate of costs. Each funeral is tailored to every family’s wishes. Each funeral account consists of the funeral directors charges (i.e. coffin/hygienic treatment etc.) and disbursements (i.e. payment made on your behalf towards the church/celebrant, musicians etc.)
Oliver Reilly Funeral Directors can be called but cannot proceed until the death has been confirmed by the GP or regular attending doctor of your loved one. If the death was expected, the deceased will have been attended to by their GP or regular attending doctor at home, in hospital etc. They should be contacted first as they will be required to visit your loved one to confirm that death has occurred. The GP or regular attending doctor needs to be made aware of the wishes of your loved one if they wish to be buried/cremated or resomated.
If the death was unexpected, the GP should be contacted first and may advise that the family contact the local Garda Station. An Garda Síochana may wish to contact the coroner for further investigation which may lead to a coroner post mortem.
A post mortem is necessary to establish the cause of death when the deceased has not been attending a doctor or where there is no history of illness. You cannot object to a coroner post mortem if it has been ordered by the coroner.
Hygienic treatment (i.e. embalming) is best practice and we recommend it in all cases to preserve the dignity of the deceased and for the comfort of the bereaved family allowing an open coffin for their loved one. At Oliver Reilly Funeral Directors, we have our own in house qualified embalmer and this ensures a very high standard of care for your loved one.
Yes, it is possible to delay the funeral for a period of time with the use of hygienic treatment. This is common when a family would like a loved one repatriated back to a different country or are waiting for family to come from abroad to attend the funeral.
